The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six original and distinct spitz breeds of dog native to Japan. The Shiba is a relatively fastidious breed and feels the need to maintain itself in a clean state. They can often be seen licking their paws and legs, much as cats do. As a curiosity, mention that the distinguishing characteristic of the breed is the so-called "shiba scream". When it feels unhappy or conversely, very happy, the dog will produce a loud, high-pitched scream.

Breed History

El Shiba Inu ha sido una raza del Japón desde los tiempos primitivos. La palabra « Shiba » se refería a algo de « pequeño », un « perro pequeño ». El hábitat del Shiba era el área montañosa frente al Mar del Japón y fue utilizado como perro de caza de pequeños animales y aves. Existían ligeras diferencias en las razas de acuerdo con las áreas en donde eran criadas.

Conforme se importaron perros de Inglaterra como los Setters ingleses y los Pointers ingleses durante el período 1868-1912, la cacería se fue convirtiendo en un deporte en el Japón, y la cruza del Shiba Inu con esos perros ingleses se hizo frecuente, de manera que encontrar un Shiba puro fue raro. En 1937 se declaró al Shiba como monumento natural, y desde entonces se crió y mejoró la raza hasta llegar a ser la raza que se conoce actualmente.

Se trata de un perro independiente y silencioso, aunque no siempre, ya que es un excelente perro vigilante y nos alertará de cualquier intruso en la casa, por ejemplo. Suele apegarse a los dueños a quienes muestra lealtad y cariño. Es algo tímido con los desconocidos, con quienes se mostrará pasivo y distante.
